Another Day, Another State

From Winnemucca, we crossed the rest of Nevada in a blur.  If it weren’t for the frequent change of pace in road construction zones, there would have been no break in the monotony of the scenery.  High desert is interesting, full of sagebrush and scrub pine, but this part of the country is nothing but...

Occasionally, there would be low hills with volcanic rock outcroppings and an occasional ranch house, but mainly the road was lined with barbed wire and a lot of empty land.

We made a gas stop in Battle Mountain, got off the freeway to drive through Carlin, and stopped again in Elko, Nevada.  (No, we did not investigate the male version of the Mustang Ranch, but Ron did threaten....)

Just before reaching Elko, we came across some very interesting rock formations.  It looked as though the wind and weather had whittled mountains into rock pillars -- a true  example of Mother Nature as artist.

Although Elko had been our planned stop for the night, we were way ahead of schedule.  We continued on through Wells and on to Jackpot, Nevada, which is on the Nevada-Idaho border.  We had hoped for a lunch stop, but Jackpot consists of two gas stations and about six casinos, and any restaurants would be inside the windowless casinos.  If we can’t look out and see Harley, we get nervous, so we kept going.

Across the border, the landscape changed.  There were more ranches, more meadows, and even some agricultural lands.  The scenery was scattered with horses, cows, and goats, as well.  We travelled about 50 miles to Twin Falls, Idaho, and stopped at a Motel 6.  Not the fanciest digs, but it was convenient and had parking by the room door.  We ran across another couple on a much bigger motorcycle.  They were both retired, and travelled a lot.  This trip, they were on their way to New Brunswick and Newfoundland, at the east edge of Canada.  Wow, what a trip!  Remember, though, they have a bigger, more comfortable bike with all the bells and whistles.  They asked Ron where his navigation system was, and Ron pointed to his head.  Old school, right?

We ordered in from Domino’s Pizza, and relaxed the rest of the night.
