Kicking Back at Big Sky

What a really, really relaxing day we’re having! We woke up when we felt like it, watched some morning television, and then went to the dining hall for a ranch-style breakfast. There were eggs, sausage, breakfast potatoes, bagels, juice, coffee -- and cereal and fruit we just didn’t have room for. Guests serve themselves, but waiters are available, and the cost is included in the room charge.

On the way there and back, we caught sight of lots of furry little neighbors like the one above. They kept out of range, but certainly were not camera shy.

After breakfast and a little housekeeping, we took a ride on Harley. About 15 miles up the road, we took a look at an exclusive community in Big Sky. There are homes, golf courses, and self-contained shopping centers. Anyone paying the big bucks to live here would have everything they need without even driving down the hill.

On the way back to the ranch, we stopped for a sandwich lunch at The Corral, a complex with a bar, restaurant, and motel with the appropriate western motif.

Back at the ranch, we did laundry and surfed the Internet for a while. (The signal is really great at the laundry room.) Then we rested up and got ready for the event of the day -- a hayride and barbecue.

What fun! With four horses and two wagons, we spent about half an hour touring the property. We ended up at a fantastic picnic site by the Gallatin River, complete with chuckwagon, bar, bonfire with marshmallows, a cowboy singer with guitar, and a great meal. Ribeyes, chicken, potato salad, green salad, corn, rolls, and fantastic beans -- what a spread. It was fun watching the people, too, from the kids trying to lasso an artificial steer to the busload of seniors who all came with nametags and stuck together. At the end, the horses galloped us back to the office and we headed back to our cabin for the night.

Tomorrow’s plan is Yellowstone early in the day and relaxing in preparation for the trip home.
