Well, summer may not be over, but our travels are...
We got up, packed, and had coffee at the hotel. We left about 8 o’clock, as usual, and decided to get breakfast on our way home. The “free” pastries at the hotel were not worth delaying our departure or elbowing the other guests aside.
For variety, we continued around the lake, instead of retracing our steps. We rode east to Stateline, and up the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe to Glenbrook and Spooner Lake, where we turned off onto Highway 50 toward Carson City, Nevada. Taking a historic side trip, we went to Virginia City (remember “Bonanza”?), and had breakfast at Sawdust Corner Restaurant, where young waitresses wore long skirts and cotton aprons. Then we continued through town toward Reno, Nevada. Continuing north to Susanville, we cut through the north end of Lassen National Forest and headed toward home on Highway 44. The last hour or so of the ride were a bit uncomfortable, due to the increase in temperature as we left the higher altitude. However, even this was a plus, because it gave us an excuse to stop along the way to rest and take in the scenery.
We got home about 3 o’clock this afternoon, unpacked, and “crashed.” Although we had “regular” food in the house, we settled for French toast and frozen yogurt for dinner. After all, we are on vacation!
