Almost to California

Today we got an early start, leaving the motel before 6:00 am to stay ahead of the rain.  We made good time, and retraced several of the Route 66 segments we covered on the way east.

On our way out of Grants, we passed by the lava beds left by the volcanic vents in the area.  Very impressive!

In Gallup, New Mexico, we stopped to take a picture of El Rancho Motel.  We noticed the sign before, but didn’t really get a good look at the building until today.  This place hosted celebrities in the 1930s and ‘40s, and still books rooms for the general public.

Ron and I have both seen the Petrified Forest National Park and the Painted Desert before, so we bypassed them this trip.

Traveling west out of New Mexico and through Arizona, we stopped at Williams for lunch at a 1950s-themed restaurant.  For dessert, we stopped for pie at the Road Kill Café in Seligman.

After a 400-mile day, we finally stopped in Kingman, Arizona, about 50 miles from California.  Tomorrow…
